Unearthed Tapes Vol: I, II, & III – Press Release

I’m excited to announce the release of Unearthed Tapes Vol: I, II, & III, a collection of songs recorded between 1996 and 2006. These tracks sat quietly on old cassette tapes for over 20 years, and revisiting them has been like opening a time capsule of my younger self.

There’s something special about the rawness and imperfections of these recordings, especially in today’s world where AI can create everything with flawless precision. Back then, I was always striving for perfection—never quite satisfied with my writing or how the songs turned out. Now, I find myself embracing the flaws, the vulnerability, and the emotion that I poured into them at the time. It’s those very imperfections that make these songs feel so alive and personal to me.

This triple album is a treasure trove of memories—some songs I hadn’t heard in over two decades, others I had completely forgotten about. You’ll find tracks about love, anger, joy, sadness, aliens, playfulness, and self-reflection. It’s a journey through my mind and heart as a younger artist, recorded mostly on a four-track cassette recorder, with a few tracks from my first digital setup.

If you’re a fan of the raw, unpolished intimacy of Iron & Wine’s The Creek Drank the Cradle, Kurt Cobain’s Montage of Heck, or Jeff Buckley’s Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk, I think you’ll find something to connect with in Unearthed Tapes. I know three albums is a lot to take in, but I actually cut quite a few songs out!

I hope you enjoy this trip through time as much as I did rediscovering it.

GAV HEALY ANNOUNCES NEW SINGLE, ‘MOMENT’, AND SPECIAL

LAUNCH EVENT TO HONOUR HIS FATHER

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Best known as a member of beloved WA folks/roots outfit, The Healy Brothers, Gavin Healy has released a new solo single called Moment, which will be launched with a very special event at Lyric’s Underground on December 4.

Ethereal yet tender, Moment is a very personal song that will strike at the heart of anyone who last lost a dearly loved family member as a consequence of cancer.

“It really is the moment where my dad died,” Healy says of the song. “So it brings me straight back to his final moments. We were very fortunate to be in the room with him. My mum, my brothers and my sister. And we happened to be just sitting around playing some songs for him and it literally just happened then, we could see his breathing change.

“We all just gathered around him and held his hand. He hadn’t opened his eyes in a day or two, but he literally opened up his eyes and looked at each one of us, then looked up towards the top left-hand corner of the room. And that was it. His last breath. That moment has played for me over and over. And I guess this song just pretty much flowed out of me.”

Two songs that Healy sang by his father’s bedside were Drive by The Cars and The End Of The Line by The Travelling Wilburys and there are references in Moment to both. Beginning its life more as an expressive catharsis for Healy, there was initially no intention of performing the song to an audience, however Moment has now created an energy all its own as a single release.

“My Dad’s always been about music,” Healy reflects. “He was a gigger and one of the last things he said to me was, ‘don’t stop playing and don’t stop writing’. I feel like in the back of my head, I’ve got him going, ‘come on, do something’.

The Lyric’s Underground launch will be Healy’s first solo show in a long time and will also showcase material from his 2020 album, All In Good Time and 2022 EP release, 3. It’s also very much a Healy bash that will honour his father musically.

“I’m getting the whole family involved,” he says. “So there’ll be me fronting it but I’ve got The Healy Family Band playing – I’ve got my brothers joining me, my sister, my sons, my nephews, my niece. So everyone’s gonna be involved in that way and I think Dad would have loved that.”

Prior to his father’s passing Healy had sustained a shoulder injury which ruled him out of playing for an extended period. So the return to the stage – not only as a solo artist, but with the whole family at the heart of it – will not only be a commemoration, but the dawning of a new musical era for all involved.

“It’s been a tough few years and I’d really like the show to be a celebration,” Healy says. “Most importantly, I want it to be a good time. I’m just wrapped to be able to do it and I feel like if I don’t do it now, I never will. So it’s gonna be a great night.”
